Radio HaHa

Update: 9 finalists revealed

We’ve just launched our fantastic new competition with E4 Radio: Radio HaHa. Submit short audio clips or comic scribblings: the best 9 will go through intensive workshops at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival, then pitch to get their idea developed into a fully-fledged radio show on the new station when it launches.

But what’s E4 Radio actually about? No doubt any radio producers among you will be drooling with anticipation at the thought of a new door being chiselled in the rock-face of British radio, so we asked the team to pitch it to us in 300 words. So from the horse’s mouth:

“E4 Radio will be a new kind of station. One that’s up for a bit of fun and mischief and for doing things differently. Like the TV channel and its website, E4 Radio will provide mainstream entertainment targeted at 16-34s. The schedule will focus on the E4 staples of great music, comedy and entertainment and will pride itself on being the first to bring its audience new stuff and new talent from these worlds.

We’re going to give the audience more access to the airwaves than ever before, providing new levels of interactivity and an active role in shaping the sound of the station, from music to the news agenda. We’re making a radio station for an audience that likes to listen to radio content when they want to, on-demand as well as live, and we’ll be commissioning different programmes tailored to these listening modes.

In terms of comedy, our door is open to every kind of comedy there is - we want our schedule to be flexible enough to accommodate to accommodate bite-sized short programmes, more traditional built blocks, and we hope to pioneer new comedy formats that don’t even exist yet. We think there’s tonnes of scope to innovate with format and we want to trial lots of things. As with all our output we want to create programming from a much more diverse set of voices, stimulate new areas of independent production and create new cross platform collaborations.”

Hi

I’ve just come across the Radio Ha Ha comeptiton and have just missed the deadline (18th July) by one hour!! Could I still submit some of my comedy ideas for E4 radio for the Edinburgh competition. I hope so..! If I can’t, is there another opportunity to get involved with E4 radio?

I recently became a comic writer and stand up. I wrote, directed, Produced a show for The Gilded Balloon last year at the Edinburgh Fringe, titled ‘Triple Threat; (**** Three Weeks).

I also came second in last years ‘Sitcom Trials’ competition in London.

I’m really keen to get involved. I have two sketches which I’d like to submit.

Hope you can help.

Thanks
Fraser Millward

@Fraser Millward: Thanks for this - I’m afraid the deadline is the deadline, so you’ve missed this one - sorry.

If you’re under 30, I’d suggest you check out the Comedy Writing category in this year’s 4Talent Awards (deadline 29 August), or potentially the Off-Air Radio one if you’re particularly interested in getting your material under the noses of E4 Radio (their Station Head is one of the judges.)

Hope this helps.
Nick

Hi, I reckon I made the deadline but as gmail would not upload files in the crucial final hours I sent my ftp details where the 8 files I was entering are placed, this is made clear in the email. Can I be sure these will be downloaded and listened to? There was no mention of using ftp but it was the safest and in the event only way for me to be sure they would get through. It would be saddening if the long hours put into producing it, and expense had been wasted. I know one email did get through at 22:00 on fri, but not the others so I sent my ftp details at 23:45, close, but within the deadline!

thanks
best

Hi, I entered the Radio HaHa competition at the start of July and was wondering if it still exists?
I’ve revisited the link several times and clawed my way through the Channel 4 website however it seems to have vanished.
Does anyone know what’s going on or should I just assume I’ve not been successful if I’ve not had a reply?
Many thanks
Carl

@Carl Humphries: Hi Carl - Radio HaHa does indeed exist, the workshops are happening next week: watch this space for updates. I’m afraid given the huge volume of submissions we received, we haven’t been able to notify unsuccessful applicants but do please stay across future opportunities by signing up to the 4Talent mailout.

@Nick Carson: Thanks for the quick reply Nick! Very much appreciated. Carl
